Students of the 300 Level, Department of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management (IRPM), one of the academic programmes under the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences at Ritman University, have embarked on an educational industrial visit aimed at broadening their practical understanding of employment relations and human resource management.
The industrial visit, organized as part of the academic requirements for the course Industrial Visit on Employment Relations and Human Resource Management (Course Code: IRP 327), is designed to expose students to real-life administrative structures, workplace relations, and human resource practices within both academic and public service institutions.
The academic exercise commenced within the University environment, where the students paid courtesy visits to the offices of all Principal Officers of the University. During the visits, the students had the opportunity to interact with key administrators and gain firsthand insight into institutional management, leadership structures, staff relations, and administrative coordination within the University system.
The students were exposed to practical discussions on organizational leadership, communication strategies, conflict resolution, employee management, and the importance of professionalism in institutional administration. The engagements also provided an avenue for the students to understand how effective human resource management contributes significantly to organizational growth, productivity, and industrial harmony.
Speaking during the interactive sessions, the Principal Officers commended the Department for introducing practical learning experiences capable of bridging the gap between classroom theories and workplace realities. They also encouraged the students to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to professional excellence as future human resource and industrial relations practitioners.
The University administrators further emphasized the importance of integrity, accountability, teamwork, and effective communication in today’s competitive labour environment, noting that organizations across the world increasingly require professionals who possess both technical knowledge and practical workplace skills.
Continuing the educational tour beyond the University environment, the students today visited the Office of the Head of Civil Service, Akwa Ibom State, where they were exposed to the operations of the State Civil Service structure and public sector human resource administration.
During the visit, officials of the Civil Service provided detailed explanations on employment policies, personnel administration, industrial harmony, organizational communication, staff development, workforce planning, and employee welfare systems within the public service. The students were also enlightened on the importance of ethical leadership, transparency, accountability, and professionalism in maintaining an efficient and productive civil service system.
The interaction further enabled the students to appreciate the strategic role of human resource management in policy implementation, organizational sustainability, and effective service delivery in government establishments. The students equally learned about the procedures involved in recruitment, career progression, staff discipline, and conflict management within the public sector.
The course lecturer, Mr. Uforo Eyo, who is also the acting Head of Department, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, explained that the industrial visit forms an integral part of the Department’s commitment to experiential learning and professional development.
According to him, the initiative was carefully designed to give students practical exposure that complements classroom learning while preparing them for future careers in industrial relations, personnel management, labour administration and human resource management.
He noted that industrial visits remain an important component of higher education because they provide students with opportunities to interact directly with professionals, observe workplace operations, and gain practical insights into the realities of modern organizational management.
He further noted that the Department remains committed to producing graduates equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies required to thrive in today’s dynamic and highly competitive workplace environment.
He expressed appreciation to the Management of Ritman University and the Office of the Head of Civil Service, Akwa Ibom State, for their support, warm reception, and willingness to share valuable professional experiences with the students.
Some of the students described the industrial visit as highly impactful and enlightening, noting that the experience has expanded their understanding of employment relations and human resource management beyond classroom discussions. They added that the visit has also inspired them to pursue excellence and professionalism in their future careers.
The industrial visit is expected to continue with more engagements aimed at strengthening the students’ understanding of employment relations, labour administration, organizational leadership, and contemporary human resource management practices in both public and private sectors.
